BridgesBridge over the Mattaponi River
Owner : Virginia Department of Transportation
Location : West Point, Virginia

McLean was the lead JV partner on this award winning Design-Bid-Build VDOT project for the Bridge over Mattaponi River in West Point, Virginia. McLean entered into a line item joint venture with Bryant Contracting Company on this project.  Bryant constructed the 24-inch pile trestle bents over the wetlands and shallow water and subcontracted the roadway work, while McLean performed all the major bridge work over the water and administered the contract with VDOT.

The scope of work for this project included the replacement of an existing two lane swing span truss bridge with a new four lane fixed bridge featuring precast spliced bulb-tee girders. The new bridge is a 3,545’ long structure by 68 feet wide. The bridge is founded on 24-inch prestressed concrete piles utilizing low water footings and columns with high caps in the river and trestle caps in the low lying wetland areas. The superstructure consists of 28 spans with prestressed concrete bulb-tee girders on the approach spans and 2 each 880’ prestressed spliced bulb-tee girder units with each featuring a 200’, 240’, 240’, 200’ span configuration. The bridge has a 212’ clear span navigational channel with 55’ of vertical clearance. The cast-in-place concrete deck in the spliced bulb-tee girder sections were poured with lightweight concrete to reduce the dead load on the longer spans.

McLean was also responsible for the demolition of the existing 1600’ swing span truss bridge after the new bridge was open to traffic.

Mclean built this bridge over an existing navigational channel while working around and coordinating with the USCG and the marine traffic. Our team was able to complete this project on-time and within budget without any permit or safety violations.

This project won two awards:

  •   2007 National Partnership for Highway Quality – State Winner of the National Achievement Award for the Route 33 West Point Mattaponi Bridge Replacement Project
  •   2006 Virginia Department of Transportation – Statewide Construction Quality Award in Recognition of Quality on the Route 33 West Point Mattaponi River Bridge Replacement Project
